ES: This is 5 Minute Mentor, a podcast where you’ll get advice from prominent engineers, authors, artists, and more in 5 minutes or less.

SG: Hey, it’s Seth Godin, founder of the altMBA, and I’m here with some advice about advice; meta advice. There’s a ton of advice in the world about how to do this better, or do that better about what to bring to work or the things that we are passionate about. And, most of that advice is pretty useful. But I have a bigger piece of advice, meta advice, which is pretty simple: Spend 20 minutes every single day developing a better habit. And once you’ve got that habit better, then spend 20 minutes developing another habit.

SG: Our life is actually filled with habit fulfillment. We spend hours every day acting out our habits. But we spend almost no time making our habits better. So, if you’ve got a mindfulness practice, and it’s working great, chop that one up. If you got an eating habit, that’s giving you fuel and energy, terrific. But what about this work habit? What about the habit of figuring out how to do pair programming? What about the habit of asking hard questions? What about the habit of leading instead of simply managing? These are all habits, habits of mind. Ignoring sunk costs, is a habit. Where do we go, when we don’t have a lot of time, and we’re grabbing for the short cut? Where we grab, is our habit.

SG: So if you can build a practice, of building a practice, if you can get in the habit of building better habits, then everything else you’ve been told, all the other advice, all the other projects you want to work on, are going to work better. Build a habit of building habits. Thanks! Go make a rockus!
